Warren Bobrow=WB: Where are you from originally? How did you decide on hemp? I grew up on a Biodynamic farm, what are your thoughts about this methodology in hemp propagation? Does it matter about being organic or Biodynamic?

Kat Merryfield=KM: I am originally from the Atlanta area but relocated my husband and 4 children to rural Tennessee in 2012 where we embraced our dream of having an organic farm and living off the grid. We lived on 80 acres of land and farmed pork, poultry, and dairy and it was the toughest job I’ve ever had. During that period, I used my degree in natural health and nutrition with an emphasis in homeopathy to develop an alternative treatment for my husband, who started showing signs of PTSD after serving 13 years in the military. While researching natural treatment options, I stumbled upon applications for CBD which I had never seen or used at that time.  Although I originally believed all cannabis derived products created a high effect, I witnessed my husband’s amazing non-psychoactive response to my CBD formulation, and I decided to sell the product at the Chattanooga Farmers market, where we also sold meat, soaps and lotions. The response from the public was staggering and from that point, Kat’s Naturals was born.

I believe that biodynamic growing principles are perfect for hemp cultivation. Because hemp will absorb any contaminants that are present in the soil, it is very important to grow and fertilize with zero outside chemicals. It absolutely matters! Keeping the soil alive and nutrient rich through natural processes will significantly increase the flavor and quality profile of the plant and produce a clean product . I know quite a few farmers who are choosing to adopt this clean growing method and their plants are some of the healthiest on the market.

WB: Why hemp (CBD) over cannabis. (THC)? What was your intro to the hemp plant? Do you have a mentor in this field? Who influenced you?

KM: Well, I chose hemp because of the amazing healing properties that both my family and the community experienced. While THC provides profound medical properties, depending on the state you live in or the company you work for, incorporating it into your wellness routine may not be an option. When I started Kat’s Naturals, there was still a substantial amount of sigma around using THC. By offering a 100% THC free option, potential customers were more open to trying our products and seeing the health benefits of hemp for themselves. We later introduced full-spectrum concentrations and they have quickly gained in popularity as the stigma around THC products has faded.

Because we started Kat’s Naturals before CBD became mainstream, I was clearing my own path in the industry with the hopes that it would positively impact our community. I never dreamed that CBD would be as big as it is today. Unfortunately, there were no mentors in the  CBD world, and there definitely wasn’t anyone I could turn to for guidance when I started in Tennessee. Because of my background in the natural health and nutrition industry, I understood how to build formulations but lacked the business expertise to launch a company. I eventually  found business mentors along the way but honestly, they were paid! My father had furniture repair and construction companies when I was growing up, and I can say his entrepreneurial spirit definitely rubbed off on me.

WB: Tell me about your company. What is your six month plan? One year? What obstacles do you face? How do you foresee removing these obstacles?

KM: When I started Kat’s Naturals, our primary focus was creating sustainable and high quality CBD oil products made from organic hemp and producing them with rigorous testing and accountability standards. I’m proud to say we have exceeded, and even expanded upon, those goals as we have grown. We now have a pretty extensive product line that includes sublinguals, topicals, edibles, pet care, and even a luxury skin care line. Along with maintaining our intensive quality standards, we also make a conscious effort to operate our business in a socially, economically and environmentally responsible manner and put people over profit. We want to be consistently recognized  as one of the most trusted brands in the industry. Most of our growth in the past was attributed to word-of-mouth, but as we look to expand and set ourselves apart from competing companies flooding in the CBD space that aren’t as stringent about consumer safety, we will increase our focus to traditional marketing and consumer education. In one year we hope to expand our reach to more locations across the country and to international markets. We are in this industry for the long haul, not just to make a quick buck, and we want to help more potential consumers gain access to our homeopathic products .

WB: Do you cook? What is your favorite restaurant? Where? What kind of food?

KM: I do cook! I cook with wholesome ingredients and love to grow my own vegetables. Chattanooga has a great farm-to-table restaurant scene. My favorite is probably Two Ten Jack, a sushi and ramen place in the warehouse district of Chattanooga. I love any meal that leaves me feeling clean, energized, and nourished after I’ve eaten it. Good nutrition is so crucial to our health, and fresh, quality food is our first line of defense.

WB: What is your passion?

KM: My passion has always been to create a better world. Natural medicines and plants have always kind of been my thing. I love to grow and forage for plants with medicinal properties and make natural remedies with them. CBD has allowed me to use both of my passions to reach a much larger audience than I ever thought was possible. One of my newest passions has been to learn more about the healing properties of cannabis. I pretty much live and breathe the industry and learn something new everyday!
